To All the Future Mamas,
“Mums”
If you’re reading this, I just want to start by saying this:
God see’s you.
Maybe you’re counting the months. Maybe you’re counting the years. Maybe every pregnancy announcement stings a little, every Mother’s Day feels bittersweet, and every empty bedroom or quiet home reminds you of the family you’re still praying for.
I’ve been there too.
This piece, “Mums,” was inspired by Psalms 113:9:
“He gives the childless woman a family, making her a happy mother. Praise the Lord!”
As I drew, every detail became a reminder of God’s heart for those of us who are waiting to become mamas.
The skeleton hand represents what appeared lifeless—dreams that seemed buried, prayers that felt unanswered, and seasons that looked barren. Yet even from that place, it gently holds a bouquet of chrysanthemums, or “mums.” The largest bloom represents a mother, the smaller blossoms represent her children, and the tiny bud just beginning to open symbolizes new life. One of my favorite details of this drawing is the soft burst of light surrounding the tiny bud painted in watercolor. It represents the moment of conception.
Did you know that when the sperm meets the egg, there’s a release of zinc that creates a burst of light? It makes me think of John 1:4 “The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.” It’s like light is God’s signature on every masterpiece He creates in the womb. 💡🤰
This drawing is so personal.
There have been many moments when I’ve looked at my empty womb and listened to the silence in a home that hasn’t yet been filled with the pitter-patter of little feet. It’s easy to become discouraged when the waiting feels long. The word “yet” has become so important to me, because it reminds me that my story isn’t finished.
Sometimes the emotions become overwhelming. They whisper that nothing will ever change, that I’ll always be childless, and that my prayers have gone unheard. But in those moments, I’ve learned something: emotions can be incredibly loud, but they are not always telling the truth. God’s Word is.
When our feelings don’t line up with His promises, we have to choose which voice we’ll believe.
Psalms 113:9 has become an anchor for my heart. It reminds me that God sees every tear, every longing, and every prayer whispered in the quiet. His Word never returns empty. He is faithful, even when we’re still waiting to see how His faithfulness will unfold.
So what do you do when it doesn’t feel like the promise is for you? What do you do when months—or even years—have gone by and you’re still waiting for your child?
Feed on God’s faithfulness.
Open your Bible and spend time with the stories of women who once walked in your shoes. Read about Sarah. Rebekah. Rachel. Hannah. Elizabeth. Women who knew what it was like to wait. Women who cried. Women who wondered. Women who held onto God when the promise of motherhood seemed impossible.
Their stories remind me that our God is faithful.
Read their stories until they remind your heart of who God is. Let His faithfulness in the past strengthen your faith for today. Hebrews tells us that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The God who walked with them is the same God who walks with us now.
If you’re in a season of waiting, I pray this artwork reminds you not to give up hope. Lift your eyes to the One who sees you. Trust that He is near, that He is good, and that your story is safely held in His hands.
🤍Lord, I pray for every woman believing for a baby. No matter the circumstances or health conditions, You are bigger than it all. You are the God who opened the wombs of Sarah, even after menopause, and of Rachel and Rebekah. Nothing is too difficult for You, Lord.
I pray for healing over every body and every womb. Let every womb function as You designed it to. In Jesus’ name, I pray that every barrier preventing these women from conceiving or carrying their babies to full term be removed.
Lord, please fill these women’s wombs. I pray Your blessing over these future mamas, their marriages, and their babies. Fill them with joy, life, health, healthy pregnancies, and smooth deliveries. May they rejoice in Your faithfulness and give You all the glory. In Jesus’ name, amen. 🙏🏼
And to the mamas and mamas-to-be reading this, congratulations! From the bottom of my heart, I’m so thankful for the little lives God has entrusted to you.
🩷Lord, thank You for the precious children You have entrusted to these mamas. I pray that You would fill them with wisdom as they parent, and give them discernment as they raise their children to know, love, and follow You. Let their homes be filled with overflowing joy, abundant grace, and deep peace. Strengthen them physically, spiritually, and emotionally, and grant them the rest they need for each new day.
I pray Your blessing over every marriage, that husbands and wives would love one another well and keep You at the center of their home. For every single mama, surround her with a faithful support system, provide for every need, and fill her heart with hope and joy.
Lord, remind each mama that she does not carry this calling alone. Walk beside her, strengthen her when she is weary, and give her confidence that You are faithfully at work in both her life and the lives of her children. May her family be rooted in Your love, sustained by Your grace, and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, amen. 🙏
